Project Honey Pot Anti-Spam Project Gets a Helping Hand From Singularity Design

February 7, 2005

Project Honey Pot, the first and only distributed system for identifying spammers and the spambots they use to scrape addresses from websites, was made available to a new audience of beneficiaries today with the addition of Macromedia's ColdFusion as an available language. Singularity Design and its founder, Jeffrey Greenhouse, lent their extensive expertise in the CFML scripting language to help convert and integrate the new ColdFusion version of the "honey pot", a special scripted web page designed to publish a unique and traceable email address. When an automated "harvester" gathers that address and adds it to a spammer's mailing list, an irrefutable link is made between the illegal collection of the address, the harvester, the mail server that sends the spam and the advertisement that has been illegally delivered.

The more honey pots are installed around the world, the more effective the project can become and the more documentation is available for law enforcement agencies to use against spammers.

Matthew Prince, CEO of UnSpam LLC (creators of Project Honey Pot ) commented on the value of offering the honey pot scripts in as many of the popular web application platforms as possible: "Every time we add another site to Project Honey Pot the entire network of members benefits. Critical to that goal is supporting all the scripting languages possible. We couldn't have gotten ColdFusion support up and running as quickly and smoothly as we have without the terrific support of the folks from Singularity Design."

Singularity Design is a Philadelphia-based online and interactive design firm. In addition to providing high-end visual design, Singularity has been creating database driven websites and web-based applications using ColdFusion and the CFML scripting language for over six years. "ColdFusion is an incredibly full-featured and versatile platform. It has allowed us to build strong, effective systems in a fraction of the time that other languages would require. We're not the only ones who feel this way, and we're also not the only ones who are tired of being inundated with spam. The opportunity to help expand the Project Honey Pot initiative and make it easy for other ColdFusion developers to take part was something we just couldn't pass up", said Greenhouse.

"There's a tipping point at which the average consumer will no longer sit by with his inbox filled up with junk. This project is definitely a sign of things to come in terms of public efforts to combat spam."
